Rushing Woman’s Syndrome

Rushing woman syndrome is literally the epitome of a modern woman.

Women are in a constant state of doing everything and being everything to everyone. The only time most women rest is when they sleep. Don't get me wrong - sleeping well (and enough) is so important. However, getting active rest, and channelling the parasympathetic nervous system much more is crucial.

Why do I say this? Women are more susceptible to chronic stress and this all starts with the HPA axis (hypothalamic, pituitary and adrenals). The HPA axis is your body's system for dealing with stress and it all starts in the central nervous system: the central nervous system sends biochemical signals to the HPA axis. When the HPA axis is dysfunctional, this can cause a wide range of health issues (excess cortisol, obesity, skin issues, inflammation, autoimmunity and infections).

In other words, just dealing with stress by always ‘pushing through it’ will eventually take its toll.

You will never eliminate all stress, but here are some suggestions to help your body deal with stress better:

  1. Take more active rest throughout the day. This could literally be sitting and doing nothing for 2-5 minutes, just breathing and being present.

  2. Always have coffee AFTER breakfast.

  3. Get serious about your sleep hygiene.

  4. Get some sunlight first thing in the morning.

  5. Make sure you’re training fuelled.
